We had two of our butterflies emerge today. One during literacy stations and the other we were able to watch. It was amazing to see it come out of it's chrysalis and how it's wings got bigger and bigger. We hope the other ones will wait until we are back on Monday.
We soaked some lima beans and looked inside toady to see the parts of a seed. First we took off the seed coat and split the seed in half. We learned that these two halves provide food for the seed until it can make it's own food. Then, we looked for the baby play inside. It has two parts, the root and the leaves. They were very small and some were attached to the seed coat.
First off, let me apologize for any flowers the kids have ruined at home. They are loving learning about the parts of a flowers and how new seeds are made. The kiddos have loved sharing their diagrams they have made at home of flowers. We have (had) 2 moth cocoons, and one emerged today while we were at lunch. We've talked about how it is so hairy and fuzzy looking. It's hard to believe that it came out of that small hole. We hope we are here when the next one emerges so we can see how it got it's body AND wings out of it's cocoon. All of our caterpillars are doing great and growing super fast. They should be starting the next stage in their life sometime next week. We can't believe how much they have grown in just under a week. We have noticed little black balls which are their old skin that has been shed as they grow. There are also webs in there which let the caterpillar get to the top of the container and will help when they need to attach themselves to for their chrysalis.
